The Station1 Frontiers Fellowship (SFF)
Station1 is launching a new phase of research and development focused on emerging educational technologies for the advancement of socially-directed science and technology. During this time, the Station1 team will be focused on these transformative efforts and the Station1 Frontiers Fellowship (SFF) will be on hiatus.
A Transformative Research Experience in Socially-Directed Science and Technology
The Station1 Frontiers Fellowship (SFF) is a prestigious, fully-funded ten-week summer experience for undergraduate students focused on socially-directed science and technology education, research, and innovation. Socially-directed science and technology is a new model of learning and research which aims to interrogate, understand, and shape technologically-driven societal impact towards more equitable and sustainable outcomes. A unique internationally-recognized model of higher education, the SFF integrates three programmatic components:
A research internship in emerging areas of science and technology with leading established and startup partner companies, research institutes, and nonprofit organizations. Station1 coordinates an exceptional portfolio of research projects in all science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) majors, including, for example, areas such as biotechnology and health technologies (e.g. tissue engineering, marine genomics, synthetic biology, diagnostics, circular biomaterials), civic technologies, socially-directed computation - artificial intelligence / machine learning, assistive technologies, water technologies, environmental and climate technologies, agricultural technologies, and sustainable materials and manufacturing.
A cross-disciplinary shared curriculum focused on socially-directed science and technology taught by world-class scientists, engineers, and researchers is applied to the internship research projects which includes topics such as sociotechnical systems, social innovation, environmental and social in/justice and equity-based design, technological landscapes across scale, historical methods, thinking with long time and the Anthropocene, social and global challenges, sustainability, resilience, and remediation, circular economy and design, community-based participatory research in biotechnology and public health, art, artisanship, and science: representations, models, and simulations, computation in social context, complexity, networks, ecosystems, and theories of change, and technosocial possibilities: histories of the future.
Personal and professional advancement activities including inclusive leadership and collaboration, scientific and technical communication, networking, and more.

Be Inspired and Build Your Future
The Station1 Frontiers Fellowship includes science and technology research internships with a social focus - projects that foster thoughtful, responsible, equitable, and ethical development of science and technology fundamentally linked to humanistic concepts and societal concerns. Station1 works closely with accepted applicants to match students to projects in their areas of interest. Station1 offers projects across all STEM majors. Example areas include, but are not limited to, biotechnology, clean technology, agricultural technology, civic technology, digital automation, autonomous aeronautics, and nanoscale materials design.
Pursue Impact through Socially-Directed Science and Technology
Based upon a foundation of inclusion and equity, this model integrates STEM with humanistic fields in order to interrogate, understand, and shape technologically-driven societal impact towards more equitable, ethical, and sustainable outcomes. We live in an era rife with social inequities and planetary perils, as the collective impact of humans threatens life on earth as we know it, radically transforming our societies and ecosystems. While science and technology have contributed enormous benefits to humanity, simultaneously it has also been entangled with and contributed to these formidable challenges. Station1 is addressing these key issues through an emerging and evolving education and research model based on socially-directed science and technology.
Unlock Career Opportunities with an Amazing Internship
Fellows will be placed in virtual paid internships in leading companies, start-ups, and university research laboratories. The Station1 Frontiers Fellowship internships will give you the preparation you need to be highly competitive for employment in emerging STEM fields, as well as for continuing on to graduate education, if you choose to pursue this career path.
Supportive and Caring Mentors
As a Station1 Fellow, you will receive more than an internship advisor, you will gain a diverse team of exceptional and caring mentors. From the Station1 staff to the shared curriculum instructors to the project mentors, the Station1 team will provide academic, professional, and interpersonal experience and will foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment. As a Station1 Fellow, you will receive much more than technical and academic guidance and learning. Mentors will get to know you personally and will serve as a resource for career advice, planning, and guidance.
The Station1 Experience
The Station1 experience is best reflected in the words of our amazing students, The Station1 Fellows, below:
“Station1 was truly an incredible experience. Being surrounded by amazing interdisciplinary instructors and mentors and my internship was everything I had hoped for. It gave me great exposure to the startup environment. I faced and overcame challenges that allowed me to build my confidence as a researcher in my future endeavors. Thank you Station1 for enabling this opportunity for me.”
“My internship experience was more than I could have ever imagined. With the help of my mentors I learned a great deal about [the] field as a whole. The experience was honestly more than I could have hoped for and I would like to thank the amazing people from my company and the hardworking and dedicated team at Station1.”
“Being a fellow at Station1 has provided me with a unique and visionary way of thinking and seeing the world. I see society in a different outlook and in a broader sense. Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity and experience.”
“The micro-climate in this program is one in which anyone can immediately feel welcomed and acknowledged. It was very rewarding and unexpected to have had as much time/opportunities to interact with the Station1 team as we did, thanks to office hours and other times for one-on-one conversations. It is a very collaborative and uplifting environment, in which I have become highly influenced to carry out these dynamics into whatever space I become a part of. Moreover, I got the chance to learn about graduate school (a conversation I had never felt like I was included in) and I appreciated that each mentor represented a fascinating field/background of research which I could learn from.”
“Station1 has introduced a new perspective for me on how to see the world. They have given me an endless amount of resources for me to succeed in my professional journey. But most important of all, they have given me the foundation for me to create positive change in society.”
“The mentorship, community norms, and atmosphere at my internship were impeccable. I had a wonderful experience there working on approachable challenges that allowed me to build my confidence as an engineer that will help me when working at future opportunities.”
"Station1 has provided the perfect balance of introducing students to research and laboratories while also sitting down and talking about some of the hard social implications that science encompasses simultaneously"
“This was my first internship, and I learned not only technical skills, but how to work on a team in industry, how to do research and approach problems, and establish connections not only with my mentor, but everyone in our office. I thoroughly enjoyed working on cutting edge science while being supported by Station1 to also focus on social impacts.”
